Back in Time: Heal The World

Recently I watched The Jackson's: an American Dream and I realized how obsessed I am with Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was one of the first artists I had ever danced to. When I graduated from pre-school, we had to do a partner dance. The song of choice was Heal the World by Michael Jackson. I had the cutest yellow dress and crispy white frilly socks.

Now that I think about it, if I could go back in time, I would totally transport to the late 80's early 90's as a 21 year old watching an MJ concert feeling the power of love and ferocity for the first time! No doubt about it, MJ was and will always be the man; he is the reason I remember to smile and to think about others.
Micheal Jackson much!

Extra Thoughts:

Heal the World is one of my favorite songs by MJ. It is on one of my favorite albums of all time, Dangerous, which was released in 1991, the year of my birth! I got to thinking if I had one superpower for a day, what would it be. I thought, hmmm.... the power to heal. I do not mean literally where you have a scrape or have been bitten by Damon Salvatore (Vampire Diary plug), but more so in the sense of healing the soul. There are a lot of people walking around with so much hurt, frustration, and stress on their shoulders. It begins to bring them down and in some cases can make them angry and bitter. I would love to be the person to take all of that away for a day. I would use my power on my mother first. I just want to take away any trouble or pain she may be dealing with internally. All I want is for her is pure happiness and joy.

We all have to learn to deal with the cards we were dealt with and learn to cope with our lives. It's up to us whether or not we will let stress and difficult situations shape our happiness. Nevertheless, for ONE day I want to be able to touch any hand and take all of the worry, uncertainty, and pain away. After I am done, we can all moonwalk-it-up in our living rooms with big ole' smiles.

And the winner is...

Remember in High School when you had to vote for best dressed, class clown, or most likely to succeed in your senior yearbook?  I started thinking about my yearbook, and I remember winning the famous Most Likely to Succeed and Most School Spirited titles!

Now that it is my Senior Year of College, I thought it would be cool to have people vote on my blog.  Below are the results!

YVONNA IS MOST LIKELY TO...

Take over the world
  3 (13%)
Become a Motivational Speaker
  10 (45%)
Become Editor-in-Chief
  13 (59%)
Director or CEO
  11 (50%)
... Not sure, But something Fierce!
  8 (36%)

Personally, I hope one day I can succeed at all of the choices listed. Of course taking over the world may be difficult, but I do have a Persian cat so maybe she can help me. I have always wondered why the Persians cats are always trying to take over the world in movies. Ultimately, I see myself being successful. I mean successful not only in terms of a career, but also in terms of life. When you start looking at your experiences and your capabilities, at the end of the day, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. #Wordup

INSPIRED: Dance & Music

I am a lover of different cultures and dance. For four years I have been involved in many cultural dances: Bollywood,  Latin,  Hip Hop, Nepali, Caribbean, and Step. I love dances from all over the world! Anything with a beat and passion will instantly me get off my feet ready to move.

I am notorious for bring my i-pod everywhere and spontaneously dancing in the most random places, especially when a good song comes on. A song that really makes me jump for joy and bust a move in the supermarket is Kukere by Ghana artist Iyana. "Kukere" means don't worry, and that is what happens when I hear the song. I just think about the joys in life.

Words to Live By

Have you ever wanted to tell a group of people #stopitandsitdown? Do you feel like you need more control over your life, image, and destiny? Who has authority in your life? Who is really in control?

The first step in answering some of these questions is to become self-aware. To become self-aware is to seek to define the self by the self for the self. Agency and authority is a key factor in self-awareness. When I think of the term of self-awareness I think of self-worth, and it is always important to remind yourself of your worth. So, I know what you are thinking, how do you do that? In the morning, after you are done dancing to your favorite jam and brewing your favorite cup of lavazza espresso, grab a pen and paper and ask yourself, who am I? Write down the first words that come to mind, and then come up with a little catch phrase or motto that reminds you of those words. I did the experiment and I came up with four words: IndependentSophisticatedand Fierce-Fabulous. From that the motto “I is double f” was born. The motto has a #drizzydrake feel to it, when I say it, but the message remains the same.

Always think of yourself in terms of a personal brand. Most brands have a quirky or catchy phrase that allows the consumer to connect with their product. Think of yourself as the brand and the consumer. This may sound crazy but think of it this way. Give yourself a motto that only you can connect to, something personal. The motto is what we will call the “product”. Now you have to sell your “product” to the consumer (yes you). Right now, you are feeding into some sort of Cartesian dualism and you have the ability to be two people sharing a body. You want to sell your product to the consumer and since you are the consumer, ultimately you want to sell it to yourself. Once you convinced the consumer, i.e. yourself, that you have a great product, i.e. personal motto, you will then start to believe in the product and furthermore use the product. Believing in your motto is to BELIEVE in YOURSELF. You will see that you are your own brand and that you are what you market yourself to be. Brands are successful, theoretically, because people believe in them and make them successful. So really believing in YOU is the way to self-awareness. When I feel lost or am feeling a little down, I will remember my little phrase and remember that I am Independent, Sophisticated, and Fierce-Fabulous and no one can take that away from me unless I allow it. Just think the Biebs..."where would YOU be if YOU didn’t believe"?
